Exclusion — Damage To Work Performed By Subcontractors On Your Behalf
Removes the subcontractor exception from 'your work' — a major construction-defect coverage killer.
What it actually does
CG 22 94 is one of the most consequential restriction endorsements in construction. The standard CGL excludes property damage to "your work" (the named insured's completed work) — but it contains a critical exception: the exclusion does NOT apply if the damaged work, or the work that caused the damage, was performed by a subcontractor. That "subcontractor exception" is what gives a GC coverage for construction-defect damage caused by its subs.
CG 22 94 deletes that exception entirely. With it attached, the policy excludes damage to the named insured's completed work whether the work was done by the insured OR by its subcontractors — gutting construction-defect coverage. A GC whose CGL carries CG 22 94 has dramatically narrowed coverage for the exact claims construction-defect litigation produces.
This is a serious red flag on a GC's own policy and on a sub's policy where the sub uses lower-tier subs. Escalate it; it's often a deal-breaker.
Verification checklist
- 01Check specifically for CG 22 94 (and the designated-sites variant CG 22 95) on the endorsement list.
- 02If present, recognize that completed-work damage caused by subcontractors is excluded.
- 03Escalate — this materially narrows construction-defect coverage.
- 04Ask the broker whether the subcontractor exception can be restored.
Common mistakes
- ·Missing CG 22 94 because reviewers focus on AI/waiver forms and skip 'your work' exclusions.
- ·Assuming the standard subcontractor exception is intact when CG 22 94 has removed it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is CG 22 94 a big deal?
It deletes the 'subcontractor exception' to the your-work exclusion, so the CGL no longer covers damage to completed work done by subcontractors — the heart of construction-defect coverage.
What should I do if I see CG 22 94?
Escalate. It materially narrows defect coverage. Ask whether the subcontractor exception can be restored, and weigh whether to accept the policy at all.
How is CG 22 95 different?
CG 22 95 applies the same removal but only to designated job sites listed in its schedule, rather than to all of the insured's work.
