Additional Insured — Lessor Of Leased Equipment — Automatic Status When Required In Lease Agreement With You

Automatic equipment-lessor AI status — triggered by the lease, no schedule needed.

What it actually does

CG 20 34 is the automatic-status version of the equipment-lessor additional-insured form. It grants additional-insured status to any equipment lessor with whom the named insured has a written lease agreement requiring such status — no need to schedule each lessor. Coverage applies to liability arising out of the maintenance, operation, or use of the leased equipment.

Like all automatic forms, it depends on a signed written lease agreement in force before the loss, and coverage for any given lessor ends when that equipment lease ends. It does not respond to structural alterations, new construction, or demolition operations performed by or for the lessor.

This is the form a contractor who rents from many vendors prefers, because it covers all qualifying lessors without issuing a new endorsement for each. When verifying, the focus shifts from "is the lessor scheduled?" to "does a written lease require AI status?"

Verification checklist

  • 01Confirm a written equipment-lease agreement requires AI status.
  • 02Verify the lease was signed before any loss event.
  • 03Check the underlying CGL limits.
  • 04Confirm your own subcontract AI requirement is separately satisfied.

Common mistakes

  • ·Assuming automatic lessor status applies without a written lease requiring it.
  • ·Confusing the equipment-lessor automatic form with the operations automatic forms (CG 20 33/38).

Frequently asked questions

How is CG 20 34 different from CG 20 28?

CG 20 28 schedules each equipment lessor; CG 20 34 grants automatic lessor AI status whenever a written equipment lease requires it, with no schedule.

Does CG 20 34 need a written lease?

Yes. Automatic status only triggers when a signed written equipment-lease agreement requiring AI status is in force before the loss.

Is CG 20 34 a construction-operations AI form?

No — it's equipment-rental coverage. The GC's subcontract AI comes from CG 20 10 / 20 37 / 20 38.
