Additional Insured — Engineers, Architects Or Surveyors Not Engaged By The Named Insured
Adds design professionals (not hired by the sub) as AI — but excludes their professional services.
What it actually does
CG 20 32 adds engineers, architects, or surveyors who are NOT engaged by the named insured as additional insureds, for liability arising out of the named insured's ongoing operations performed for the additional insured. It's used where a subcontractor must add the project's design professionals (hired by the owner, not the sub) as additional insureds.
Critically, the form excludes coverage for "bodily injury," "property damage," or "personal and advertising injury" arising out of the rendering of, or failure to render, any professional services by or for the additional insured — including architectural, engineering, surveying, supervisory, inspection, or design services. In other words, it covers the design professional for the sub's operations, not for the professional's own professional liability.
Verify the right design firms are scheduled and understand that this is not a substitute for the design professional's own professional liability (E&O) coverage.
Verification checklist
- 01Confirm the correct engineer/architect/surveyor firms are scheduled.
- 02Understand the professional-services exclusion — this covers operations liability, not design errors.
- 03Verify ongoing-operations scope and add completed-ops coverage if the contract requires it.
- 04Check the underlying limits meet contract requirements.
Common mistakes
- ·Believing CG 20 32 covers the design professional's professional liability — professional services are excluded.
- ·Scheduling the wrong design firms or omitting one the contract requires.
Frequently asked questions
Who does CG 20 32 protect?
Engineers, architects, or surveyors not hired by the named insured (typically the owner's design team) — as additional insureds for the sub's ongoing operations.
Does CG 20 32 cover design errors?
No. It explicitly excludes liability arising out of professional services. Design professionals still need their own professional liability (E&O) coverage.
Is it ongoing or completed operations?
Ongoing operations. If the contract needs completed-operations coverage for the design professionals, that must be arranged separately.
