Additional Insured — Designated Person Or Organization
Broader additional-insured form than CG 20 10 — not tied to a specific scope of operations.
What it actually does
CG 20 26 names a designated person or organization as an additional insured under the CGL, but unlike CG 20 10 it is not limited to liability arising out of the named insured's ongoing operations. It is broader: in pre-2013 editions the additional insured was covered for liability "arising out of your operations," and in post-2013 editions for liability "caused, in whole or in part, by" the acts or omissions of the named insured or those acting on their behalf.
This form is sometimes preferred by GCs because it doesn't require the act causing the loss to be tied to a specific scope of operations. However, post-2013 ISO revisions narrowed CG 20 26 in important ways — particularly the limits cap and the "not broader than required by contract" language.
CG 20 26 does not by itself include completed-operations coverage; pair it with CG 20 37 if completed operations are required by the subcontract.
Verification checklist
- 01Read the endorsement form date — pre-2013 and post-2013 versions have different triggers.
- 02Confirm the additional insured name on the schedule matches the subcontract requirement.
- 03Verify completed-operations coverage is provided separately if needed.
- 04Check whether the subcontract specifically requires CG 20 10 or CG 20 26 (some prefer one over the other).
Common mistakes
- ·Accepting CG 20 26 in lieu of CG 20 10 when the subcontract specifies CG 20 10 — they have different triggers.
- ·Missing that CG 20 26 still requires the named insured's involvement to trigger coverage; it's not 'cover everything' for the AI.
- ·Overlooking that completed operations are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Is CG 20 26 broader than CG 20 10?
Generally yes — CG 20 26 is not limited to a specific scope of operations the way CG 20 10 is. But post-2013 editions narrowed it with a limits cap and 'not broader than required by contract' language.
Does CG 20 26 include completed operations?
No. Like CG 20 10, CG 20 26 does not include completed-operations coverage. Pair it with CG 20 37 when the subcontract requires completed ops.
Can I substitute CG 20 26 when my subcontract says CG 20 10?
Not safely. If the subcontract names CG 20 10 specifically, accepting a different form can be a breach. Ask for the form the contract requires.
